How to Have a Personal Relationship with God…

In the Bible (Acts 16), the story is told of a man who was in charge of the jail in Philippi. His responsibility was to guard the prisoners, two of whom were Paul and Silas. During the late night hours, an earthquake shook the prison and freed these men from their bonds.

If the prisoners escaped, the jailer would die a horrible death. Realizing his danger he cried out in great fear, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” The jailer perhaps meant being saved from death, but Paul saw this as an opportunity to meet his greater need. The Bible goes on to describe how Paul boldly stated, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you shall be saved…”

These two statements are just as meaningful today. You should ask the same question: “What must I do to be saved?” The same answer Paul gave to the jailer so long ago is also true for you today: “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved.”

Saved from what? Saved from eternal separation from God. Instead, by asking God to forgive your sin and then believing on Jesus as your Savior, you will spend eternity in heaven.

Friend, it’s not our good deeds that get us to heaven. It’s not what church we happen to attend or how often we go. It’s not dependent upon our family background or what our parents may have done on our behalf. Concerning eternity, none of those things matter at all. Knowing God for eternity happens by His grace through your faith!

What matters is that you and I personally admit our need to God – forgiveness of sin – and then to trust Jesus and Him alone for eternal life. Jesus died for you, giving His blood so that you can be saved and spend eternity with Him in heaven. This simple prayer spoken to God in sincerity from your heart is your first step toward new life…

Dear God:
I admit my sin to you and ask your forgiveness. I believe Jesus died for me and I place my trust in Him to be saved. Amen

Once you have placed your faith in the Lord Jesus, it’s time to grow to know Him better. Begin by reading His Word the Bible. Be sure to spend time talking with God through prayer. Find a church home and attend as often as you can. Look for opportunities to serve others.
