We the People: Rights and Responsibilities

Our nation has reached a critical point in its history. After nearly a year of COVID-19, civil unrest, property destruction, financial difficulties, mass layoffs, and political upheaval, we trust and hope for better days in 2021. But who can we look to for leadership to get through these challenging times?

Perhaps it’s time to realize that we cannot depend on our national or state political figures to provide leadership that brings results. I have long held the opinion that the best role for political leaders is to provide and sustain an environment that allows its citizens (we the people) to thrive and succeed, physically, socially, and economically.

This is what liberty is all about: to live our lives without unwarranted intrusion or interference. From the Declaration of Independence:

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness…”

So, what can we do when so much seems to be beyond our control?

First, be knowledgeable and understand the times. In these days of censorship and news suppression, it can be quite difficult to find truthful, reliable information, but this is essential if we are to be informed as citizens.

Look for alternative media sources. More importantly, while following mainstream media sources (Fox, CNN, etc.), use discernment. Practice separating truth from the opinion of highly paid pundits.

Second, find a way to be involved in your local community. Pray, give, serve, and look for ways to make a difference as an individual.

Third, watch and listen, analyze and evaluate, come to sound conclusions. Look for opportunities to influence others, not with high-minded arrogance, name-calling and personal attacks. Instead, present truth and logic. But – do not be silent! When your ideas are criticized – or when you are personally criticized, do not react emotionally, but respond thoughtfully, in wisdom.

Be a man or a woman of Issachar. Understand the times in which you live. Know what must be done to stand for that which is right and good. Liberty depends on this, for if our nation is to get through the challenging days ahead, then personally applying these principles will be required.
